Critical Voices 3 - Press Centre

Patti Smith: In Performance and In Conversation - May 3rd, 2006

As part of the Arts Council’s Critical Voices 3 programme, Patti Smith, musician, poet and artist will be in Sligo to participate in a number of events.

On Saturday 20 May she will give a performance of music and poetry and on Sunday 21 May she will be in public interview with arts journalist Peter Crawley.

These events will accompany the first exhibition of her work in Ireland, a major retrospective of her photography and notebooks entitled Patti Smith, Drawings and Photographs, to run at the Model Arts and Niland Gallery from 20 May - 9 July. Although best known for her ground-breaking contributions to the worlds of music and poetry, Patti Smith is also an accomplished visual artist, whose drawings have been exhibited in museums and galleries throughout the world.

Smith’s drawings, inspired by artists such as William Blake and Antonin Artaud and rendered in fine lines and delicate colour, represent a powerful fusion of image and text. Her latest series of large-scale drawings (the largest measuring 48 inches by 30 inches) is inspired by the damaged World Trade Center towers after the September 11 terrorist attack. Using text from the Gospel of Peace of the Essences, the Koran and other sources, she has reconstructed the building’s remains in an intricate web of poetic language. The exhibition includes over 90 works spanning the period from the late 1960s to the present; brought up to date with a series of new photographs made in 2006.

These events will provide a unique opportunity for audiences to experience the breadth of Patti Smith’s artistic practice, from music and poetry to drawing and painting.

“Like Andy Warhol, Patti Smith isn’t an artist who is easily categorized. She moves fluidly through the genres of music, visual art, and language,” says John Smith, exhibition curator and archivist at The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. “Her work and her career defy the traditional boundaries of both the art and music worlds. To understand Smith’s work is to understand the organic quality of what she does.”

Peter Crawley is a journalist and broadcaster who contributes regularly to The Irish Times, The Sunday Times and Newstalk radio station. He is the News Editor and Web Editor of Irish Theatre Magazine.
